The garden seat display marks a new approach to displaying China at Manchester Museum and in the North West. The Lee Kai Hung Gallery of Chinese Culture opening in  2022 seeks to build empathy and better understanding between the UK and China. We want to engage as many people as possible with the rich culture and heritage of China through storytelling, imaginative and innovative design, teaching and programming. There will be a performance space for partners, artists, groups and practitioners, to profile, extend and enhance Chinese cultural activity in Manchester.

We want to celebrate the contribution made by Chinese people, and work with Manchester’s Chinese communities and Chinese cultural institutions. We are working closely with the University’s Manchester China Institute to explore the contemporary economic, political and environmental landscape of China through a rich programme of research and events.

All this has been made possible thanks to a generous gift from Manchester businessman Dr Lee Kai Hung. Dr Lee has also funded the creation of a new Chinese garden at the Royal Horticultural Society’s gardens at RHS Bridgewater in Salford, opening in the summer.
